GEOGRAPHICAL

Cuba is the largest archipelago in the Western Hemisphere. More than 1,250 km long, Cuba has a total population of about 11 million living on an area of more than 110,000 km2.

 

PEOPLE

The population is an ethnic mixture of basically spanish and African descents. Official language is Spanish. But in many places English is understood or even spoken.

The US-Dollar is a legal tender almost all over the island, along with the EURO, which is already accepted in Varadero and Cayo-Coco / Cayo-Guillermo. Equivalent to the USD is the Peso Convertible, a Cuban substitute to USD valid only in Cuba.

Traveller’s checks and most credit cards are welcome at all hotels and at most shops, with the exception of American Express and all credit cards and traveller checks issued by US banks.

Television standard is NTSC. The time zone is Eastern Standard Time (GMT–5h). Electricity is 110V, at 60 cycles. Most hotels also offer 220V, at 60 cycles. Electric outlets take flat-pronged plugs. No vaccines are required for Cuba.

 

CITIES

The capital of Cuba is Havana with an approximate population of 2.5 million. Major cities are Santiago de Cuba (420,000 hab.) in the east of the country, centrical Camagüey (285,000 hab.) and eastern Holguin (235,000 hab.).

 

BEACHES + KEYS

Nearly 300 beaches ring the island, offering swimming, fishing and diving facilities. Apart from the main body and the Island of Youth, Cuba consists of nearly 1600 islets and keys.

 

CLIMATE

The climate is moderate subtropical with an average annual temperature of 25ºC. Humidity ranges from 77% (November to April) to 82% (May to October). The weather conditions in Cuba favour productions all over the year with exceptional light conditions and over 300 sunny days per year.

 

LANDSCAPE

Landscapes in Cuba vary from Caribbean palm beaches, black sand coast, lonely bays, industrial harbors, dark red soil, deep green sugarcane-fields, huge citrus and banana plantations, tropical jungles with waterfalls, plains, mountains, endless roads, desert like areas, marinas, villages and towns.
